# Call wall and put wall

What call and put walls are, why price stalls at them, and when they break.

A **call wall** is the strike above price with the heaviest call positioning,
and a **put wall** is the strike below price with the heaviest put
positioning. Traders read them as the day's likely ceiling and floor, because
options dealers' hedging tends to sell into the call wall and buy into the put
wall. Together they are often called **gamma walls**.

## Why price reacts at a wall

When dealers are long gamma around a strike, a move toward it makes them
trade against the move: they sell as price rises into a call wall and buy as
it falls into a put wall. That steady counter-flow is what makes walls act like
resistance and support, especially in a calm (positive gamma) regime.

## When walls break

- **Negative gamma.** Below the [gamma flip](https://q-bitf.com/docs/concepts/gamma-flip)
dealer hedging chases the move, so walls give way more easily.
- **The wall is being eaten.** Today's flow on the opposite side shrinks the
wall during the session. q-bitf tags this as **fighting** in options flow.
- **Expiry.** Same-day options behind a wall disappear at the close, so a wall
built mostly from 0DTE can vanish into the next session.

After a break, the next wall out (call wall 2, put wall 2) is the usual next
target.

## A real example

![NQ Candles widget on Oct 6, 2026: price rejected at the call wall](https://q-bitf.com/docs-img/candles-call-wall-hold.png "NQ, Oct 6, 2026 (Replay). Price peaked at 31,616.75 against the 31,612.84 Call Wall around 11:15 ET in STRONG POSITIVE gamma, then faded back to the Gamma Flip. ## Reading walls in q-bitf

- Walls are ranked by strength and drawn thicker the stronger they are.
- A quality badge (**STRONG**, **MODERATE**, **WEAK**) says how much weight sits
behind a wall and how close it is to price.
- A live wall only moves when another strike becomes clearly stronger, so it
  does not flicker.
- The [scoreboard](https://q-bitf.com/docs/app/scoreboard) shows how often each wall actually
  held.

See every level in [Key levels](https://q-bitf.com/docs/concepts/key-levels).

## Questions

### What is a call wall?

The strike above the current price with the heaviest call positioning. Dealer hedging tends to sell into it, so it often acts as resistance.

### What is a put wall?

The strike below the current price with the heaviest put positioning. Dealer hedging tends to buy into it, so it often acts as support.

### What is a gamma wall?

Another name for a call or put wall: a strike with a large concentration of options gamma that price tends to stall at.

### Do call and put walls always hold?

No. They hold more often in a positive gamma regime and break more easily below the gamma flip, or when today's flow is eating into them.
